UM Stephens College of Business Launches Mini-SCOB Day

May 23, 2023

The University of Montevallo Stephens College of Business has created a new prospective student experience as part of a Mini-SCOB Day event on campus.

The purpose of the Mini-SCOB Day, which first began with a partnership with one school in the fall of 2021 and grew to more than 10 schools during the 2022-2023 academic year, is for students of business academies or clubs at their high school to experience a day as a student in the Stephens College of Business.

The typical Mini-SCOB Day agenda includes 1-3 classes on different business topics, a student-driven panel discussion, a UM campus tour and a free lunch in Anna Irvin Dining Hall. The students also enjoy a Q&A session with Dr. Amiee Mellon, interim dean of the Stephens College of Business.

The Mini-SCOB Day has offered a great opportunity for prospective students to learn about new majors in the college, Mellon said. Dr. Milad Jasemi Zargani has lectured on topics discussed in courses that are part of the the new Data Analytics major.

“I truly enjoy presenting on data analytics and introducing students to the power of this field,” Jasemi Zargani said. “During the presentation…the students usually got the feeling that our data analytics program equips students with the skills and knowledge they need to use data to uncover insights and drive business outcomes. Here at SCOB we’re helping to prepare them for the future and giving them a competitive edge in the job market.”

Jason Perry, director of UM student diversity recruitment and retention, said the Mini-SCOB Day has also provided an opportunity for prospective minority students to learn about business majors at UM. Perry said students receive invaluable feedback from participating in the event.

“The Montevallo MADE Program is honored to partner with the College of Business to expose students interested in Business to the dynamic students that represent the University of Montevallo and Montevallo MADE Program,” Perry said. “While giving prospective students a glimpse of life in college as a SCOB student, we found it important that they have an opportunity to hear directly from current students who faced similar fears, concerns, interests, or aspirations, as well as how at UM and within the Montevallo MADE program, we can meet the needs of our students and help them exceed their expectations.”

If you are a high school teacher or career counselor and would like your students to experience a Mini-SCOB Day, email the Stephens College of Business at scob@montevallo.edu or call (205) 665-6540
