P-12 Art Education

The Alternative Masters’ P-12 Art Education Program is for students who have earned a bachelor’s degree in art and desire a master’s degree and advanced teacher certification (Class A). This certification will allow graduates to teach art at the preschool through high school levels (grades P-12).

The P-12 Art Education Alternative Master’s program at the University of Montevallo is for those who have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher and wish to be certified to teach in Alabama. An alternative master’s degree leads to advanced (Class A) teacher certification at the preschool through high school levels (grades P-12) in art education.

Admission Requirements

  • Online application at montevallo.edu/ apply.
  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum 2.75 GPA) or graduate degree (minimum 3.0 GPA) from a regionally accredited college/university*.
  • Praxis II Content Area Exam**.
  • Teaching Education Program Interview.
  • Fingerprint/background clearance

Conditional admission is available in some circumstances to students who have not satisfactorily met all admission requirements.

*Minimum GPA of 2.0 allowed with a corresponding higher Praxis II score.

**Students seeking certification in P-12 art have required prerequisite undergraduate level courses. A degree evaluation will be completed upon admission to assess the need for prerequisite courses.

Montevallo Educators’ Partnership

Candidates employed by eligible school systems can receive a scholarship of up to $110 per credit hour toward tuition for all program coursework.

Coursework overview

All coursework must be completed with a minimum overall GPA of 3.25. The edTPA assessment must be satisfactorily completed.

Teaching field courses can be taken throughout the program but cannot be taken in Phase III.
