Provisional Certificate in a Teaching Field

The University of Montevallo offers the classes needed for a candidate to fulfill the requirements for a Provisional Certificate in a Teaching Field (PCTF). Candidates must have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution and be employed by a school/system. The employing superintendent or private school administrator must request a PCTF for the candidate. Teaching Fields offered at the University of Montevallo are as follows: biology, business, English/language arts, Family and Consumer Sciences, general science, history, mathematics, social science, or Spanish. After the candidate has completed the required PCTF applications, coursework, and assessments, he/she will be eligible for a Class B teaching certificate in his/her PCTF teaching field.

The ONLINE Provisional Certificate in a Teaching Field at the University of Montevallo is for those who have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher and wish to be certified to teach in Alabama. UM’s potential PCTF areas are as follows: art, biology, business, English/language arts, family and consumer science (FCS), general science, history, mathematics, social science or Spanish. A completed PCTF leads to Class B teacher certifcation in the chosen teaching field.

Admission Requirements

  • Online application at montevallo.edu/ apply.
  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum 2.5 GPA) or graduate degree (minimum 3.0 GPA) from a regionally accredited college/ university.

Bundled tuition rate

Candidates are admitted as enrichment/ non-degree seeking students and are eligible for a special bundled, discounted tuition rate when all PCTF courses are taken at the University of Montevallo. The bundled tuition rate includes the option for students to participate in the EDI 597 course at no extra cost to help with their preparation for edTPA. For individual courses taken at UM for PCTF, the regular graduate tuition and fee rate would apply.

 

Coursework overview

All coursework must be completed with the Alabama State Department approved grade to be considered for the PCTF application (please see the ALSDE PCTF application for specifc guidance).
